Kia ora my name is Rongo Iam 74 years old. Iam one of 4 born in Otaua to Atareta daughter of Pou Te Rata of Nukutawhiti Mangakahia. My parents seperated about 1940 and my eldest brother Boy (Titi) twin brothers Makoare and Fred grew up with my aunties uncles and Karani Pou Te Rata in Mangakahia. He took my twin brothers to their first day at Pakotai Native school and he died in 1945 when I was 8years old. I think I can say my brother Fred and I who are the last surviving two of Atareta's children are the only ones of his grandchildren to have known him when he was alive. Iam looking for photos of my Karani and I do know there is one somewhere and would dearly like a copy of one please. No reira noho ora my e nga whanau katoa Rongo Ruwhiu Topine.

Hey there Rongo

I can't believe it, I just entered your name on my whakapapa.....I did not know about your brothers, but yes..only Sunday...4th March. I very rarely come onto this whakapapa site, but tthe first thing i see is your message.
I do not read Maori very well, but I think you are looking for a photo of your grandfather? or Grandmother? Would that be Pou Te Rata Pou and Wikitoria Te Whata?
I do not have a photo for you, but it is nice to say hi. I will keep an eye out for one though and I could ask some of the Pou's that I do have contact with.
My name is Wayne Bradley and my mum was Maraea Poa of Mangakahia, Pakotai , her mum was Mere Morgan (Wharepapa), and Mere's mum was Hohi Te Rata Pou, the eldest daughter of the Te Rata Pou. She would have been your Grt Grand Aunt and sister to your karani and aunty to your mother. I have a photo of Hohi Te rata Pou so there should be a photo of your Karani somewhere.....

Anyway..email me....are you still in connection with the Pou family in Mangakahia? Also maybe the Pou marae may have a photo....but I shall ask around too.

Good luck to you aand your brother...please feel free to email me anytime....my email phipley@optusnet.com.au or phipley@hotmail.com

Regards Wayne

Kia ora e titi

Do you remember your grandmother? Was her name Wikitoria TARAWA or Wikitoria TE WHATA.

If it was, then she was a sister to my great grandfather Hoone Tane TARAWA.

Do you recall these whanau? Do you have any interesting stories.

By the way, I do not have any photos of your Karani.

Well done for posting. Good luck with your search.
