Waiata: NGA PUAWAI O NGAPUHI

Whakarongo mai
Ki te reo e tangi nei
E ringihia mai ana
Mai i aku kamo
Nga roimata e

Whiti mai te ra
Ngaro ana te maemae
Ngaro noa te pouri
Kaua e mau riri
Anei ano he ra

[CHORUS]
Maranga mai e te iwi
O nga hapu Ngapuhi
Kia mau, kia u, kia pupuri ai
Ki nga akoranga nui

Takahia te ao
Ka kitea te iwi
E tu tangata mai tatou
Nga uri o ratou
Kua mene ki te po

Tenei te mihi
Ki nga kai awhina e
Ki nga whaea nga matua
Anei ra ko nga hua
E puawai ana mai

[CHORUS]
Maranga mai... x2 [repeat twice]

Nga kupu tenei waiata na: Piripi Cope
O nga hapu a: Ngati Pakau / Te Mahurehure

Not sure if this is the one but I think it might be - its often referred to as the Ngapuhi anthem. Its called "Nga Puawai o Ngapuhi"

Whakarongo mai,
ki te reo e tangi nei
E ringihia mai ana,
mai i aku kamo
Nga roimata e

Whiti mai te ra,
ngaro ana te mamae

Maranga mai....

Nga kupu: Piripi Cope

Kia ora p3home, Is the waiata your after called "I runga au o Ngapuhi"? I think the third verse goes:
Ma wai ra... e taurima
te marae i waho nei
Ma te tika... ma te pono
me te aroha e.
Was taught it in high school some 20 years ago, but cant remember who wrote it, or the rest of the verses. Its probably not thte right one your after.

peaceful regard
Jacqui

Hmm, I beg to differ - I believe "Ma Wai Ra" is from Ngati Porou - written by Hone Taiapa for is brother Pine who passed away while Hone was in Ngapuhi helping with the Whare Whakairo which now stands on the Treaty grounds.

I'm wondering whether the moteatea P3home is thinking of is "Te Whare Tapu o Ngapuhi"?

it all depends what mawai rai was talking bout so rukena ki rahaki ou kupu...

Mawai ra e Taurima Te Paepae o Runga ra
o Te rangi, o te aroha, ka whakaangi ra

noho nei kaua e tangi he rerenga wairua
ki te iwi aua ra e tahuri e te aroha e

me he mea kei nga awa o Waikato nui e

Tangihia au i konei kua riro Korua
ki te rangi ki te mano
ki mataara e

so therefore ma wai ra e taurima te marae i waho nei

is not teh only mawai ra waiata in this country kia ora

Kia ora Te Kawatapuarangi,

I was talking about the waiata that Edwards.Jacqueline was stating:

Ma Wai Ra
E Taurima
Te Marae i waho nei
Ma te tika
Ma te pono
Me te aroha e

Seems like you were talking about another waiata, don't ya think.

And yes, I know it's not the only Ma Wai Ra "in this country" that I'm talking about, but I think it is the one that Jacqueline is talking about, since this verse doesn't even appear in YOUR waiata.

Heoi ano,

Pai rawa atu ngaa waiata katoa i roto i o taatou Ao Maaori. Engari, tooku whakaaro, ko teenei te waiata e paa ana ki te koorero o Jacqueline.

Kia ora

Sista

Tena koutou,

Me whai wahi awau hai whakatika i nga pohehetanga a etahi.

Ma wai ra was composed by Henare Te Owai from Ngati Porou, of Hiruharama marae not far from Ruatoria and the waiata was composed for Pine Tamahori a Maori minister at that time in Ngati Porou. Apirana Ngata sent Pine to teach Nga Puhi the haka 'Ruaumoko' for the welcoming of the Governor General Bledisloe at Waitangi in 1934. Pine died in 1933 a year before the hui in Nga Puhi. It has 8 verses and not 1.

Hei tangi aroha mo te minita a Pine i tona kaha ki te awhi, engari ko te utu o ana mahi, ko te mate.
