Kia Ora All,

Can anyone help me out? On reading a book called "The Hauraki Plains History" I came across a chapter called "Our Maori People". It went on the say that a few of the tribes around the Hauraki Plains area included Ngati Hako, Ngati Paoa, & Ngati Rua.

Can anyone tell me where Ngati Rua would have orginated from? Reason being my ggggrandfather has listed on his death certificate Ngati Rua as his tribe. We thought he was Ngati Paoa & Ngati Hako. He also lived and died in Kopuarahi, Hauraki area.

Any help much appreciated
Cheers

Ngäti Rua would be the hapü of a particular part of the Hauraki Plains. The hapü there are all related so no need to worry. Ngäti Maru is a main tribe there & so is Ngäti Tamaterä of which I belong to.

Hi I havnt been on this site in a very long time. Anyway i was reading your message regarding you wanting to know where Ngati Rua originate from... I see someone had answered you, but their is also a hapu in Opotiki (Whakatohea) that is also called Ngati Rua. The original name of this hapu was called Ngati Ruatakena than was later shortened to Ngati Rua. How do I know this? Because I am Ngati Rua (Ruatakena) o Whakatohea. Hope this helps!
