Ngati Whauroa used to occupy the western banks of the Waikato awa in Taupiri, that area between Huntly and Ngaruawahia. About 1885-6, most of that land was lost, so the hapu spread. Horahora marae, Rangiriri can be considered to be of Ngati Whauroa through a tupuna called Akarauti, whose children married into that whanau.
A number of other marae(s)in te Puaha o Waikato can also whakapapa back to Ngati Whauroa, as well.
