Kia ora ano, This is the name of my great grand dad. Stories are very few about this koro. He was of Ngati Whatua descent as far as I can determine and in Kawhia at one point, one son only that I know of...Honehone Materoa.(Who spent the later part of his life in Waikato/Morrinsville, Tokoroa etc) Does anyone know him? Or of him? I'd really like to know more about this man.
Hei kona ra
Incase someone does know something, I found out that Poihakena married a 'Ngarongo Clarke'. Does this ring any bells? Actually she was also known by another name according to a few maoriland court docs, but I'll get back to that when I find the piece of paper I wrote it on. Sorry.
The names for this nanny were 'Ngarongo Maki Karaka'. Koro Johnny Materoa had a few siblings from what I've managed to remember only one brother at this time, he was known as Bubbles now deceased. Nanny Ngarongo was married three times:
(1) Poihakena Materoa and had up to four tamariki
(2) Edwards Dawson Merritt, had maybe 1 child, and
(3) Tuteao Te Uira.
I have not managed to find out much about Poihakena. I do not have knowledge of any whanau sources at this stage, if anyone knows any info about this tipuna please, korero mai.
