I have found the details of a New Zealand born soldier in the American Civil War, and who was killed in action at the battle of Winchester, Virginia, on September 19, 1864. He was William Hazel, who served as a private in the 122nd New York Infantry. His muster roll data shows that he was born in New Zealand, black eyes, black hair, and dark complexion, previous occupation farmer, and was aged 19 at the time of his enlistment in 1862. He is also shown in the 1860 U.S. census, aged 17, born New Zealand, and residing as a farmer at the home of Frederick E. Soule, a farmer, and his wife Mary, at the town of DeWitt, Onondaga County, New York.
If anyone can give me any details of where, in New Zealand, William Hazel was born, as well as any additional data, this will be very much appreciated.
Thank you for any data provided.
