Kia Ora

My great grandmother was Annie Catherine BILLINGS born abt 1889. Her eldest sister was Mary Eliza BILLINGS (married a fella PLANT) born abt 1884.

When Mary was born, she had the name PEDRO as this was her mothers name. Her mothers name was Catherine Maria PEDRO because PEDRO was the name of her step father, Charles PEDRO who lived in Kawakawa.

Charles beloved was Ere KAWHENA. Charles was not Catherines biological father, though he took her as his own.

Mary Eliza BILLINGS (she became BILLINGS when her mother married George Robert Billings) had a son before she was married. His name was Alfred Merton BILLINGS and he was born around 1906.

What we know is that Alfred lived with his Granny Billings (Catherine Maria BILLINGS nee PEDRO) and at some point he was sent to the East Coast to live with whanau because she did not approve of his taste in girls.

My calculations suggest that she must have sent Alfred away when he was in his teens so therefore sometime between 1919 and 1926.

The questions I have are these... with whom did he go to live, and how are we connected to them. We know we are Ngati Porou, and have it on reasonable authority that we are Ngai Tane... however, most of this is hearsay information...

If ANYONE has heard any stories about Alfred Billings (Also known as Dick Billings) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get in touch with me.

Many thanks 🙂
