Kia Ora everyone,

I was hoping someone out there may be able to help me locate some of the Smith whanau who are from Kaihu in the Kaipara please. I am trying to find any descendants of a Henry Smith who was born in 1892 at Maropiu, up from Kaihu. His mother was Lizzie Smith and I think his dad was Ben? Henry Smith had about six children and some are still alive up north somewhere - I don't want to post up any names of those who may be still alive, but his children would be around in their 70's.

I am trying to see if my mums whanau is linked with this Henry Smith of Kaihu as we have a Henry Smith in our whakapapa but he lived a little bit earlier than this Henry Smith of Kaihu.

Hope someone is able to help.

Thank you in advance

Kia ora,

I know of a Henry Smith from up those ways whose wife is Hoana Akuhata - they had 10 children, 4 of whom died as infants.

This Henry Smith mother is Elizabeth Pene and his father is Harry Smith - he was a German who went missing off the bluff and was never found.

Henry had a sister Elizabeth who had no issue.

So I am sure you are talking about the same Henry Smith from Kaihu that you are looking for - if there is any other info that would help you confirm if this is the same Henry Smith from your whanau then post here and I will see what I can find out and get back to you

Good Luck! 😀

Kia ora Poutumanawa,

Hey, that sounds like the right whanau!

I have Henry Smiths death certificate and it states his wife as Hoana - it also has his father as Harry Smith and mother as Elizabeth - so you're spot on there Poutumanawa.

At the time of Henry's death (1958) he had 6 children living, five sons and one daughter. I know the daughter is still alive and lives somewhere up the Northern Wairoa area. It would be good to try and find out more on this whanau as it could help piece together our whakapapa.

Thanks very much Poutumanawa for posting that info up, I really appreciate it - I hope you can find out some more.

Thanks again & take care

Kia ora ano!

If you are at home I have heard that there is a hura kohatu (unveiling) in October for one of the children of Henry - I will post details in the hura kohatu section here when I get the full info.

If you are in Aus (I am guessing because of your username) some of the mokopuna of Henry are in Perth, Geraldton and Brisbane - I may be able to get you a number if you like for the one in Perth?

Just post here if you would like that and I will see what I can do

good luck! 😀

Kia ora Poutumanawa,

Yes, we're on the east side of OZ. It would be good to contact those mokopuna who are over here in OZ - that would be greatly appreciated, thank you. That's awesome.

I haven't come across many Maori Henry Smith's from the late 1800's and it would be interesting to see where they fit into those Smith lines up North where my mums Smith's whanau come from.

Thanks again for your help Poutumanawa, it's a gr8 help

Take care

Kia Ora, Are you able to confirm if Henry had a son or brother by the name of William (Bill) Smith who married a lady by the name of Mary. These are my grandparents and trying to locate the Smith family as well.

Kia Ora Alanasmith,

Sorry, I wouldn't know if Henry had a brother/son by that name or married a lady Mary. Where does your line come from?

Sorry for the late response. My mother told me my Whanau is from the Bluff area and moved to Queensland, Australia.

Any connections to the Smith whanau from the Bluff area?

They had a son Peter Raymond Smith, 1947.
Moved to Queensland Australia.
Believe they have a few sons and a daughter?
William and Mary believed to be from the South Island (Bluff) area. Not too sure.
Mary possibly from the lines of the Ferguson whanau. (not too sure of spelling)

Kia ora alanasmith,
The named doesn't look familiar sorry, or the area, not Bluff from the best of my knowledge. Our lot came from the Kaipara and Hokianga area.
Have you tried looking at any Australian websites at all, like Ancestry.com? They have a great selection of records there.
Are you in Aus or NZ? If you're in Aus you can visit your local library and use their computers to access Ancestry.com, otherwise use from home if you prefer. The library is free.
I did a quick search from my home computer (I don't belong to Ancestry.com) and came across a Peter Raymond Smith on the Australian electoral rolls living at Griffith in Queensland.
Here's the link:
http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl=ROOT_CATEGORY&rank=1&new=1&so=3&MSAV=0&msT=1&gss=ms_f-2_s&gsfn=Peter+Raymond+&gsln=Smith&mswpn__ftp=Queensland%2C+Australia&mswpn=30096&mswpn_PInfo=5-%7C0%7C1652397%7C0%7C5027%7C0%7C30096%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C&msbdy=1947&sbo=0&uidh=000

Hope this is a little bit of help. Do you know much more on them at all?

Take care
