Kia ora Karie-Ann, me too, I have a copy of her marriage certificate to can't put my hands on it at the moment. I visited Kawhia about 2007 and bought a book on Kawhia history from the museum. No records of Laurie family burials but there is reference to Laurie's in the book. The book references them living at Maketu which I suspect is just below or further along from where the Marae is, the one which fronts the foreshore. There are a number of Casey, Petersen and Edwards relatives that have visited Kawhia in search of some answers. Quite interesting, I first heard this story when we moved to southland from Gisborne and no matter who tells it the story is the same, although I had been told the iwi was Ngati Maniopoto. I appears that Astel was a bit of a chance man, came from Australia rather quietly!! and aparantly sold arms to the chief? Was afforded the protection of the chief and as you say presented with a wife either daughter or neice. What is your connection? Katherine Casey (nee Petersen) was my Grandmother, Annie Petersen (Nee Edwards) GGrandmother, Annie Edwards (nee Laurie) GGGrand mother and Te Rangiata was Annie Laurie's mother.
Love to hear from you.

Ps I do know that John Laurie, Astley's brother that brought Annie up after her mother died then her father drowned. Moved his family closer to the Auckland area.
