Tena koutou,

We were just wondering if we should create another child called whakapapa.maori.org.nz where we can place all of our resources for whakapapa into one place.

This would mean that our whakapapa section our FAQ section to do with finding people, our Email Directories as well as all of the whakapapa related parts of the Papa Panui (Finding Whanau, Tracing Tupuna, Names Being Reasearched, Lists, Whanau Sites and whakapapa links) can be put together in a place that would be dedicated to Whakapapa Only. At the moment as you can see from the lists above, we have whakapapa information and pages in various parts of our site.

It would not necessarily mean that the whakapapa sections of the Papa Panui would move as we can still leave them here.

Any feedback, comments and opinions will be most appreciated.

Heoi ano,

Kia ora maori.org.nz

I remember that there used to be a site whakapapa.maori.org.nz and when I tried that link tonight, it works with a message saying "We have moved Home to maori.org.nz" and then redirects to the Whakapapa section, so I was wondering why that was done, because I am sure you had a good reason to do it!

Kia ora poutokomanawa,

Ae that is true - the children (sub domains) moved home!

Before we had our database crash (as documented in the news section) we had just changed server providers (the people where we store our website with). As part of that package we could only have 2 children and would have to pay for each additional one - and there were about 10. So they all moved home except the matamua - whakaahua.maori.org.nz - our Clip Art section.

It was also at that time that we changed from our sky background (which we had used since 1996 symbolising that the sky was the limit for Maori) to our woven background, as everything had been woven back together.

However, the database crash happened with our new provider within days of changing and within days of the new Papa Panui starting. This was not acceptable as we lost members posts, including a new TANGIHANGA one. After ringing the States numerous times and not getting it resloved, I managed to track down a phone number for Mitacare and at a respectable hour I phoned Sydney to explain what happened, to beg forgiveness and to ask if the post could be redone, which Mitacare kindly agreed to do.

So we moved back again to our old provider who we have been with ever since.

And why did we change initially? They had a new tech who was a bit hoha, but when I contacted them after the crash to discuss moving back I found that that tech had been fired, so the issues we had there initially which caused us to move in the first place, had been resloved.

I hope that answers your question.

Kia ora korua,

I am a newbie to maintaining websites and I understand why things happened as they did. I haven't had any personal experience with servers etc., other than as an end-user. My past administrative and payroll involvement help me understand the importance of data collection, storage and maintenance.

My present server provider has been satisfactory but I do not have the volume of traffic that this site has. The main reason why I wanted to do things this way was for educating myself and members of my family, no pop-up ads and without any formal training it has been a bit of a struggle. Never mind, my hit-and-miss attitude and my understanding of computer logic helps me keep sane.

For the separate sub-site, I am all for it .. just like I have had to do to rearrange our family websites. It would be really nice to just go into a room without other distractions.

Love your site ...

Kia ora

I knew there had to be a good reason for whakapapa.maori.org.nz moving home

I also agree with HarveyFly about not having other distractions and having all of the whakapapa info in one place like before was great.

Maybe if this was done again, then the old whakapapa archives could be there too.

This is not such a bad idea actually, it would certainly be to our advantage to have our whakapapa resources and such in the one place.

Tena koutou

As per the previous post, the move to have all information pertaining to whakapapa in one section, would be the best.

As time goes, the more inforamtion added to the lists section etc will become spread out here and there, so ae, all info in one place, and ae, the archived whakapapa can if possible be added to.

I also think that that would be a great idea! To have everything in one place will make the process of finding whanau alot easier!

Tena koutou,

We have started to design whakapapa.maori.org.nz and it definitly removes the distractions as HarveyFly said, by having everything whakapapa related in one place. The links for example are far easier to navigate with just the Whakapapa related links, whakapapa new links and whakapapa top links.

We have also decided to call this section of our site Whakapapa Club.

We are also improving the search capabilites for the "Names Being Researched" list, to allow for searching of any names also in the initial post, not just the title, as it is now.

There will also be a "Full Search" where you can search the posts, the lists, the links and the names all from one page, instead of having to be in each section to search, although this facility will still be available.

When we have finished, we will be removing the "Names Being Researched", the Lists and the Whakapapa Club Chat facilites from the Papa Panui. The only place for these to be accessed will be at the Whakapapa Club.

The whakapapa links and sections in the Papa Panui - Notices will stay, but will also be available in the Whakapapa Club.

The old archives for whakapapa will also be here, as suggested by Poutokomanawa.

There will not be another signup required - if you are a member of the Papa Panui you will automatically be a member of the Whakapapa Club and visa versa.

Time frame - about 1 month.

Tena koutou,

We have finished the Whakapapa Club where all of our resources are in one place.

The search facilites have been improved - visit the whakapapa club and click on "Full Search" to try them out.

Enjoy
